Learning English
The British are not known for being good at learning other languages. This means that learning English is very important to cope with life in Britain.
There are many English language courses available. However, standards and prices vary a lot.
If you think that you will want to stay in Britain for a long time and apply for 'indefinite leave to remain', or become a British citizen, you will have to pass an English test that is recognised by the government. So it is important to find a course that offers the right qualifications.
Basic classes
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) ESOL is a learning system for adults that is backed by the government. ESOL courses range from beginner to advanced.
English for Specific Purposes (ESP)
ESP classes are tailored to specific areas of employment, such as catering. Only 'priority groups', such as some refugees, asylum seekers and unemployed migrants, may be eligible for free tuition.
Paying for classes
Unfortunately you will only be able to attend classes free if you are unemployed or receiving financial support from the state (called benefits) because you are on a low income. Even then, you are not guaranteed to get free classes.
If you are seeking asylum and have been waiting for a decision for over six months, you will be able to attend classes for free.
